Mandate

I was assigned the task to redesign their logo and to create a visual identity that embodies their vision and the community of artists they’ve curated.

Client

8BITPEOPLES is a netlabel that prides itself on amplifying experimental soundscapes and uses retro gaming as a visual references.

intentions

When I went through their site, I took note of their library of artists, the album covers and it’s early 2000’s layout. My goal was to create an illustrative logo icon with a simpler logo mark that could be utilized in different contexts. Keeping the playfulness and nostalgia in their approach, I sketched out ideas utilizing bold colours and a retro game inspired aesthetic. This led me to the memorable personified icon being used throughout their branding.

Design Making

Leaning into absurdity, the graphics differ and include a series of characters used in different contexts. Some of the promotional tools include motion graphics of moving rave scenes with the logo glitching in and out, the process of teens screen printing merch in a dirty studio and peeling stickers in a bar's bathroom stall.
